Interreg

Project implementation:

1 November 2017 – 31 October 2019

Total project budget:

€2,612,644 (of which from our budget: €503,520)

Project objectives and activities:

This joint Slovak - Hungarian project focused on the active and comprehensive development of eco-tourism between the village of Oborín and the Tokaj cross-border region over an 80 km section along the Bodrog River and its tributaries and includes attractive eco-tourism elements, which complement one another and offer tourists the opportunity to enjoy multi-day, active recreation. This comprehensive development work is reflected in the fact that activities are implemented in multiple locations with the engagement of many partnering tourism service providers and the involvement of local governments. The tourist route will be constructed between the village of Oborín, along the Laborec River in the Latorica Protected Landscape Area, and the Bodrogzug, an area located at the mouth of the Bodrog and Tisza rivers. The Bodrog River is a transport route connecting these two areas and is rich in flora and fauna.

The immediate objective of the project along the Bodrog River and its tributaries is to increase awareness among tourists of eco-tourism elements, to facilitate the construction of a water adventure trail, a bicycle path, an educational trail, bird watching lookout towers, and a rural museum, and to ensure the revitalization of an oxbow lake on the Laborec.

By completing the project, the area involved will become a tourism destination in our region as the tourism activities on offer will attract a large number of tourists, thereby increasing the number of visitors to our region, and the lengths of their stays; we will introduce them to protected animals and plants in the Latorica Protected Landscape Area, in the Medzibodrožie Protected Bird Area and in the Oborínske jamy area of European importance, as well as the world of aquatic animals along the Laborec and Latorica rivers. Visitors will have bird watching opportunities, an educational trail to enjoy and the completion of the project will create favourable condition for the overall development of tourism in our region.

The objective of this development is to take local conditions into consideration within the creation of active and high-quality tourism. The long-term goal is to increase the number of visitors coming to our region, primarily thanks to comprehensive development.

The primary activities and development elements of the project are:

  • establishing docking facilities, purchasing vessels, a registration information interface and mobile applications
  • creating a 4-point information centre
  • developing additional tourist attractions related to the waterway: bird watching / photographic places, nature trail, fishing program, cycle path, country museum
  • creating hiking and biking trails
  • purchasing accessories needed to operate tourism activities, training personnel responsible for the maintenance and operation of the offered services
